Munch on the Big Apple! 33 million tourists visited New York City in 2021. That’s more than three times the population of the city.
That number may seem a little high to you. But once you find out about things to do in NYC, you’ll think that number is too small. All you have to do is read a New York guide on the city’s greatest attractions.
What are the performing arts in New York like? Where can you take a look at great art? Where should you go if you want to go for a walk?
Answer these questions and you can enjoy what the world’s greatest city has to offer. Here is your quick guide.
See a Broadway Show
The Theater District in Manhattan contains dozens of theaters. Each one offers unique shows, including adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays and original musicals.
Take a look at the different theaters and see what shows are available during your visit. Keep in mind that you’re not limited to Broadway shows. You can go to an off-Broadway theater and see a different production.
Tickets can be very expensive, but you can buy one from a scalper or an online service. You can also talk to an NYC travel agent and see if you can buy a Broadway ticket as part of a travel package.
Watch Live Performances
NYC entertainment is not limited to Broadway. Madison Square Garden and Barclays Center offer numerous live events such as stand-up comedy performances. You can get Kevin Hart tickets and tickets for other performers through resale marketplaces.
Many restaurants and bars offer live music. Most of them invite local bands and musicians to perform on weekends, but you can find concerts on weekdays. Visit the websites of restaurants to see what their schedules are.
You can also find street performers all throughout the city. Some of them perform music, others dance, and a few read poetry or make art. Put on your walking shoes and visit popular areas like Madison Avenue to see them.
Eat at Renowned Restaurants
New York has dozens of restaurants with at least one Michelin star. These restaurants may be pricey and hard to get into, so book your reservations in advance and save some money.
Masa is America’s only sushi restaurant with three Michelin stars. The restaurant does not have a menu, with the chef selecting dishes for the guest and judging how much more they want to eat. You may have sushi with Omi beef or truffles, or you may eat only fish.
Thomas Keller runs Per Se, which offers two tasting menus with nine courses each. One of the menus is for vegetarians, so you can go to Per Se if you don’t eat meat. Neither menu repeats a single ingredient over the course of the meal, letting you try out a variety of flavors and textures.
Eric Ripert runs Le Bernadin, which is a seafood restaurant. You can try a tasting menu that offers scallop caviar, lobster, and Dover sole. For dessert, you can enjoy mousse, strawberry confit, and ice cream.
There are plenty of great places to eat that are cheap. Talk to a resident about where to eat in NYC and branch out across the five boroughs. Brooklyn is home to a number of popular pizza places.
Visit Art Museums
Ask anyone about NYC attractions, and they’ll tell you about the art museums. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is the largest art museum in New York. You can view works of art from all time periods and parts of the world, including interiors from 1st-century Rome.
If you are a New York resident or student, you are not obligated to pay for your ticket. You must otherwise pay $25, but you can spend as much time as you want in the museum. You can also order your tickets ahead of time, letting you plan out your schedule.
If you’re more interested in modern art, you can visit the Museum of Modern Art. The museum is home to works from some of the world’s most famous artists, including Vincent van Gogh and Pablo Picasso. You can also watch film screenings and musical performances.
The Whitney Museum offers a collection of 20th-century and contemporary American art. The Whitney Biennial takes place every two years, and it is a showcase for up-and-coming American artists. It is open this year until September, but you must reserve tickets for it.
Walk Through Central Park
If you’re looking to save money, you can go to Central Park. You can spend the entire day walking through the park, enjoying the scenery.
The Pond and Hallett Nature Sanctuary are two popular sites in the park. You can take photographs of the ducks in the Pond and look at the beautiful trees in the sanctuary.
If you’re interested in sculptures, you can go on a walking tour and view different artworks throughout the park. Women’s Rights Pioneers Monument is the first statue in New York to depict female historical figures. Cleopatra’s Needle is the oldest sculpture in Central Park, dating from around 1450 BCE.
